Hares Croft. Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. A substantial two stage property development that resulted in a sympathetically re-imagined design, which helped turn a stylish bed & breakfast, back into a family home.

INTRODUCTION

Contemporary extensions to convert a stylish ‘bed & breakfast’ back into a family home. Before undertaking this substantial property renovation, which required concept design and 3D visualisation expertise, it was necessary to carry out a feasibility study as well as a flood risk assessment before embarking on this two stage property development. The result, a sympathetically re-imagined design featuring striking architectural detail.

WHAT WAS THE BRIEF?

Having recently purchased the property, the owners of Hares Croft wanted to convert this large C-shaped bungalow ‘bed and breakfast’ into a family home. The main issues were integrating multiple bedrooms, and en-suites back into the flow of the main house, whilst increasing the provision of primary ‘living areas’ to suit modern family living.

Sat on a large open plot with panoramic views of idyllic countryside, the property’s existing external appearance was relatively modern, and on-trend with the clients’ taste and style. Likely to have been a converted stable block from an adjacent property, the proposed works would need to supplement and enhance this modern feel for the property – with a strong focus on maximising the picturesque views currently enjoyed.

OUR SOLUTION

Broken down into 2 main stages – stage 1 sees an addition of a feature corridor, constructed from randomised panels of glass and timber cladding, allowing the outer bedrooms to be brought back into the main property footprint, whilst adding visual interest to the courtyard entrance. The material combination sees the new addition sit seamlessly against the original building. Stage 2 sees a modest pitched roof extension to the rear of the property with large feature glazing maximising the primary views out to the countryside. The internal area featuring vaulted ceilings adding a sense of space to the main family living area, as well as a dramatic feel both internally and externally.

Initially attracted to Bastion through their offering of 3D visualisation and was not disappointed with the initial meeting and designs put forward. It has been an enjoyable experience working with Keith and found him to be very responsive, accommodating to changes whilst offering valuable advice at all times. Our builders have complimented the level of detail in final drawings and I would not hesitate to recommend or use Bastion for any future projects.

A large soffit overhang has been incorporated to the rear extension to tie in with the architectural features of the main building. This allows the glazing at high level on the gable to appear centred on the new addition, with a corner bi-fold arrangement sitting off centre below – thus maximising views, whilst retaining a sense of balance and symmetry to the property.
