Extending into the loft can be a great way of increasing the space in your home, especially for houses with limited external grounds. In some circumstances they can be achieved without planning permission or major structural work, which therefore makes them time and cost efficient too!
Here's some examples of basic designs which can be easily achieved in the right conditions. Does your house match any of these!?
1. Velux Windows
Nice and simple. The roof is unchanged, only the addition of velux roof lights and a new staircase. Depending on whats existing, there may be minor structural alterations required to the roof to achieve the internal space. If your house has a large existing loft then this may be the solution for you. Unless you live in a conservation area this can be achieved without planning permission.
2. Dormer Window
Dormer windows can come in different shapes and sizes, here we have indicated a gable roof dormer. Flat roof dormers are also popular. The intention of dormers are to increase the use able floor area in a loft space. If you have a good size loft with space to stand then this may be a consideration for you. In most cases this can be achieved without planning permission.
3. Hip to Gable
In this case, an existing hipped roof is extended to form a gable end. More structural work and new materials are required for this making it slightly more expensive than example 1 and 2 but will create greater additional use able floor area. Those looking to increase the floor area of their loft should consider this design. It is likely that you will need planning permission to do this.
4. Mansard Roof Conversion
This is were the partition walls of a semi detached or terraced property are extended vertically and a shallow pitched wall and roof are built to create something similar to a flat roof dormer. This is common in built up areas where there is limited opportunity to extend on the ground. You should expect to need planning permission for this type of conversion.
5. Custom Loft Conversion
Each and every project is different and other types of conversion/ extension are possible. Above are just a handful of standard examples we often come across. If your property does not fit any of these, don't worry, we may still be able to help you.
